Fatphobia in Massage Spaces

I would often stop myself from booking a massage for fear that I would be too fat for the massage therapist to work with before becoming a massage therapist myself.

I’d had experiences where a massage therapist would be rougher with my body thinking I couldn’t feel the deeper, pointed pressure or tight grasps through my flesh.

This is just one of the many reasons I decided to become a massage therapist. Because I know that I’m not the only client to lie flat in pain and not now how to communicate to my massage therapist that they’re hurting me.

Verbal and non-verbal communication, consistent attunement with your body, supportive touch and caring presence are what you can expect from a massage session with Volver Bodywork.

All so you’re receiving a massage with the right pressure, rhythm, intention, and touch for your body.

A few more details of what to expect: a massage table with a weight limit of 750 lbs, wide table extenders for more room to rest your arms, larger sheets to feel more covered and secure, plenty of pillow/cushion options to support your body however it needs.
